Op magazine, created by Evergreen State College students John Foster and Dana Squires, helped connected Olympia, Washington to the rest of the underground music world. The publication reviewed independent releases, and provided a way for music fans to connect with music scenes in a pre-internet universe. Op attracted an incredible array of talent including producer Steve Fisk, Beat Happening front man and K Records founder Calvin Johnson, Beakers and 3 Swimmers drummer George Romansic, and Sub Pop Records founder Bruce Pavitt.
